Dorchester Lobby

The long, light-filled lobby at the Dorchester Condominium in Philadelphia received a thoughtful, timeless upgrade that is relevant to the landmarked building’s multi-generational tenant population. Taking cues from the iconic mid-century design of the building’s architect, Milton I. Schwartz & Associates, Marguerite Rodgers retained the existing travertine-clad walls and added new travertine flooring and custom carpet in warm, complimentary tones. Beyond the interest and textures of the forms and surfaces created in wood, bonded metal, and resins, durability was achieved for the highly trafficked space. To render the narrow length of the space welcoming and comfortable, seating groups are arranged between the over-scaled floor lamps, an allée of trees offer a contemplative moment, and the lobby desk has a reassuring presence. A combination of vintage and new furnishings and large-scale custom pendants complete the design.
